If you require to purchase a ticket - you should consult the official web site of Edinburgh Trams here to ensure you understand -
The ticket machines are mostly situated on the platforms of the Tram Stop. The machines for Murrayfield Stadium are at the start of the stairs; and the Airport just before the platform entrance.
Look out for a machine to purchase a ticket. No ticket sales are available on the trams. Each tram normally has a ticket inspector who will check tickets and issue a "standard fare", an on-board fare, which is basically a penalty fare - of £10.00, if you do not have a valid ticket.
The ticket machines have a green or red light at the side indicating if they are operating. Green - yes and Red - no.
If the Edinburgh Trams logo is on the screen simply touch the screen anywhere for use. If the machine offers tickets then proceed. The default language is English but a choice is available for French, German, or Italian.
Follow the on screen prompts.
Options are given, single, return journey or a day ticket...
Then an option for Adult, Child, Family, Airport Zone, etc. Full details are on the information board on the platform shelter. Choose which ticket is required.
The number of tickets required must be "added" with a default setting of "0" which can be confusing. Simply touch the screen to add a number.
When the number and type of ticket is chosen a total shows. Payment can be made by coin or "card". A minimum transaction payment by card is currently £3.00. No charge made for using a card to buy the ticket. Bank notes are not accepted.
Returned rejected coins fall into a small dispenser behind the plastic screen about knee height. No change is given.
When the correct money or payment has been made the ticket will be dispensed into the area protected by the plastic cover.
The journey for a single ticket requires to be commenced within a certain time. If in doubt consult the official site.
No liability is accepted for this information. You should check before travelling. Please check with Edinburgh Trams.

"An upgrade to ticket machines across Edinburgh’s tram system means they will be able to accept the new pound coins, which come into circulation this week..."
“...We would also like to remind people that they need to buy their ticket – using coins or debit/credit card – or validate their travel card before boarding the tram.”
Machine at York Place with message that "Ticket stock empty" as seen in November 2015.
