30/03/2017 - Record passenger numbers reported -
Posted on Wednesday, 29th March 2017 at 09:00 by Edinburgh Trams
"Edinburgh Trams has recorded its busiest day helped by the RBS Six Nations Rugby series. Scotland’s match against Wales at BT Murrayfield Stadium in late February clocked up the system’s highest patronage level for a single day with just over 28,000 passenger journeys being made.
Edinburgh Trams Managing Director, Lea Harrison said:
“Across the three matches staged at Murrayfield this season we recorded over 75,000 journeys, a clear indication that rugby fans see the tram as a perfect way of getting to the heart of the action.
The stadium’s dedicated tram stop is ideally placed for supporters travelling either from the City Centre, Edinburgh Airport or the Ingliston Park and Ride site. This season we once again introduced extra trams to provide a more frequent service and ensured extra staff were on hand to respond to the large numbers of customers wishing to use our trams.
To have recorded our busiest single day is a fantastic milestone. Previously the record had been 27,000 customers for a One Direction concert during the first year of our operations. Our services are continuing to go from strength to strength and we’re proud to be developing a strong reputation for going the extra mile when major public events are being staged in and around the city.”"

Local residents and visitors to Edinburgh will have the chance to ‘spot’ a newly-wrapped tram when it is bought into service this weekend.
Wrapped in eye-catching artwork to promote Edinburgh Trams’ new #Tramspotting campaign, it will display messaging encouraging people to ‘Choose The Tram’ for travel in the city.
Edinburgh Trams General Manager, Lea Harrison explained: “The wrapped tram will help promote the newly enhanced service pattern we introduced at the start of the year that now sees trams running from every 7 minutes throughout the day, including weekends.
“With our trams featuring in the new Trainspotting film, we thought we’d tie in with the excitement around its imminent release by using the ‘Tramspotting’ hashtag. It’d be great to see pictures on social media from customers who have spotted the special tram out on the system!”
The latest wrapped tram follows the success of a similar promotion that helped publicise Edinburgh Trams’ free late night Hogmanay services, a move that helped result in more than 5,000 residents and visitors using trams in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Lea added: “Our ‘Decide To Glide’ Hogmanay tram proved hugely successful in promoting one of the city’s key annual events whilst also emphasising Edinburgh Trams as the perfect transport option.
“With trams travelling through the heart of the of the city all day, every day, we’ll be looking to wrap more trams in future to help give an extra boost to some of Edinburgh’s prestige events.”

Part of the Press Release from 16 December 2016 detailing the first all over advertising tram:
Edinburgh Trams General Manager, Lea Harrison said:
“Wrapped trams are common in other cities with light rail networks but this is the first time we’ve used the approach in Edinburgh. With the tram travelling through the heart of the city all day, every day it's a great chance to give our prestige events a further boost.”
“Our trams offer a fantastic opportunity to promote attractions such as the Festivals, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the Royal Highland Show and we’re planning to work with organisers next year to promote the events at the same time as emphasising that our services offer a perfect transport option.
Lea explained the tram wrap was not a commercial arrangement. “It's our way of promoting the best of what Edinburgh has to offer,” he said.
The tram will officially be brought into service this weekend heralding the Festive season and upcoming Hogmanay celebrations. It will be used extensively in the future, encouraging people to ‘decide to glide’ to the major flagship events Edinburgh is famous for.

26/07/2016 - From Edinburgh Trams -
Edinburgh Trams are to run from every five minutes during the morning and evening rush hours to help cater for higher demand. The move follows a successful trial carried out during the weeks of 11 and 18 July to check that there were no impacts on traffic flows from the increased frequency. From 26 July the service will run from every five minutes between 7.30am to 9.30am and 4.30pm to 6.30pm rather than current frequency of eight to ten minutes. The change means there will be an extra three return journeys during both the morning and evening rush hours, providing a total of 1,500 additional passenger spaces.
George Lowder, Chief Executive of Transport for Edinburgh, said:
“We are very pleased to make this change. A lot of work has gone into making sure the new journeys would integrate seamlessly with other traffic and I appreciate the efforts that all the staff at Edinburgh Trams and City of Edinburgh Council have put into this. We will maintain our focus on improving the service on the existing line for the benefit of commuters, residents and visitors alike.”
